The bikes have either a combination lock or a frame lock. You can find the code for the combination locks directly in the app after booking. If you have a bike with a frame lock, the lock on the rear wheel opens automatically as soon as you start the rental. If you want to lock the bike, just lock it manually - pull the lever on the frame lock.
